Practice Drills
The TI provides several easy, and fun practice drills. First, the club is
for practice swings only. You cannot strike golf balls with the club nor
would you want to. The objective is to keenly listen and wholly focus on the
club while performing practice swings. This allows the club to automatically
train professional rhythm into your muscle memory.
The TI is a precision instrument and striking a real golf ball
would destroy it.
Discovering the correct setting: You may search for the most comfortable
rhythm through a little trial and error or you may want to swing like a
Tiger (TI equivalent 8) and just go for it. It is expected that you will
quickly find that several of the settings work well for you, and shortly
thereafter tune in the one setting that is perfect.
Relax, and play with the different settings. They are all correct
tempos and it is a matter of feel that determines the one setting best for you.
Waggle and Listen Practice: Set a tee in the ground, address the tee and
take small swings back and forth through the ball position. Make sure to forward
swing past the tee. That will enable you to absorb the timing of the
takeaway, the lagging change of direction, and the accelerating swish. This
exercise is a great way to seek out your favorite personal setting.
Key Point: It is important to note that the TI needs to rest
in the address position for a short moment to prepare for the next practice
swing.
Waggle then Swing: Set a tee in the ground, address the tee and take small
swings back and through the ball position. Now move right into a full swing.
This is useful in absorbing timing, rhythm and also a repeatable pre shot
routine. It is recomended to waggle only 1-2 times prior to moving into the
full swing, less you develop a cumbersome pre-shot routine.
Key Point: It is important to note that the TI needs to rest in the
address position for a short moment to prepare for the next practice swing.
Hear the Club head: This is the most important and rewarding practice
exercise. Take full swings while "Feeling" and "Hearing" where the club head
is through the entire swing.. You will be amazed at how fine your swing
senses can become , and an added benefit is that by merely listening
intently, your head becomes still. This is a natural law and this exercise
takes advantage of it !
Key Point: Let the backswing note "guide" your swing to the top. It is
important to let the TI guide you and not to try too hard. Relax, it will
work automatically.
Key Point: Let the second note sound as if it is behind you. When you swing
the TI in time, the second note guides you into your downswing with a
powerful lagging of the club head. This is the true secret
of the Pros' whip like slinging of the club head.
Key Point: Match the swish. When the TI is swung in time, the "recorded"
swish and the "created" swish sound as one. It is readily apparent if your
swing was a bit too late or a bit too early.
At the Range: Obviously , great rhythm and timing without proper form is
not what we are looking for. At the range use the above drills to warm up
and get ready (Practice swings only!!). Then hit balls with your regular
clubs practicing whatever you need to at the time. Between every ten shots
or so, step back and take several swings with the TI to keep your swing in
tune. This will reaffirm your mechanical practice and enhance your
development.
